Hexagram 11: Opening

泰Tài · Earth over Heaven

Also known as Peace, Pervading, Harmony.

The character 泰 means peace and greatness, and it names China's sacred Mount Tai. Hexagram 11 is one of the most welcome figures in the book. Things flow, people get along and effort pays. The work is to use the good period well, because it won't last forever.

The figure

Earth over Heaven. It looks upside down, but that is the point. Heaven rises and earth sinks, so here they move toward each other and meet. When the high and the low are in contact, everything between them thrives.

The judgment

What was cramped is on its way out and what is large is arriving. A good stretch, and worth using.

The small and petty are on the way out. The generous and capable are on the way in. It goes well, and things go through.

The image

Sky and ground in contact. Shape what is happening between them so the people under it can live in it.

A good season still needs structure. Plan and organize so the good times reach everyone, not just a few.

The six lines

Counted from the bottom, the way the figure is built when you cast it.

  1. Line 1, at the bottom. Pull up one stalk of grass and the roots bring others with it. People of the same kind move together. Setting out goes well.
  2. Line 2. Be patient with the rough edges, cross the river with resolve, don't forget what's far away, and don't play favorites. That is how you keep to the middle.
  3. Line 3. No flat ground without a slope, and no going without a return. Stay steady when things turn and you're without blame. Don't fret about it. Enjoy what you have.
  4. Line 4. Coming down to meet your neighbors without showing off your wealth. People trust you because you are plain and sincere.
  5. Line 5. The ruler gives his daughter in marriage to a lower house. Reaching across rank brings blessing and things go very well.
  6. Line 6, at the top. The city wall crumbles into its own ditch. The good period is ending. Don't fight it. Put your house in order and hold back.

Reading it for a question

Hexagram 11 is a strong yes. Act, build relationships and share what's going well. Keep line 3 in mind: good times turn, so use this one to build something that lasts.
