Also known as Approach, Overseeing, Arriving.
The character 臨 means to come near, or to look down over something as an overseer does. Hexagram 19 is about a rising time: influence grows, things come within reach, and people above and below draw closer. It also carries a warning that every rising season turns.
The figure
Earth over Lake. The ground stands above the marsh and looks down into it. Two strong lines push up from the bottom, so strength is growing from below toward what lies above.
The judgment
It begins, opens, pays and holds. By the eighth month it turns bad.
The opening is the same four words as hexagram 1. The eighth month is a reminder that this rising will reverse in time. Use it while it lasts and prepare for the turn.
The image
Ground standing over the marsh, looking down into it. Teach without running out, and hold people without a limit.
When you are in a position to look after people, do it generously and keep at it.
The six lines
Counted from the bottom, the way the figure is built when you cast it.
- Line 1, at the bottom. Drawing near together with others. Holding steady goes well.
- Line 2. Drawing near together. It goes well, and everything helps. The time is on your side.
- Line 3. Drawing near the easy way, with comfort and charm. Nothing comes of it. If you see that and regret it, you are free of blame.
- Line 4. Drawing near completely and openly. Not a mistake.
- Line 5. Drawing near wisely, by choosing good people and letting them work. This suits a great leader. It goes well.
- Line 6, at the top. Drawing near with a generous heart, coming back to help even after your own work is done. It goes well, and no one can fault it.
Reading it for a question
Hexagram 19 is a good sign. Your influence is growing, so move toward people and opportunities now. Lead by care, not by charm, and remember that the season will change.
