Hexagram 55: At Full

豐Fēng · Thunder over Fire

Also known as Abundance, Fullness, Prosperity.

The character 豐 shows a ritual vessel heaped high with offerings. Hexagram 55 is about the peak: abundance, success, everything at its fullest. Like the sun at noon, it can't stay there. The point isn't to worry about the decline but to shine fully while it lasts.

The figure

Thunder over Fire. Thunder and lightning arrive at once: movement and clarity together, the height of power. It is the reverse of hexagram 56.

The judgment

It goes through. The king gets there. Do not worry. Best at noon.

Only someone with real vision can lead in a time of plenty. Don't grieve that it will pass. Light up everything while you can.

The image

Thunder and lightning arriving together. Try the cases and hand down the sentences.

Clarity inside and decisive action outside. A time of plenty is a time to settle things justly.

The six lines

Counted from the bottom, the way the figure is built when you cast it.

  1. Line 1, at the bottom. You meet a partner of the same kind. Spending even ten days together is no mistake. Going forward is recognized.
  2. Line 2. The curtain is so thick you can see the stars at noon. Pushing ahead brings mistrust. Show your sincerity and it goes well.
  3. Line 3. The cover is so dense that only the faintest stars show at noon. You break your right arm. It isn't your fault; there's nothing you could do.
  4. Line 4. The curtain is thick and stars show at noon, but you meet a leader of your own kind. It goes well.
  5. Line 5. Gifted people come to you, bringing blessings and recognition. It goes well.
  6. Line 6, at the top. Your house is grand, but you shut your family out. You look through the gate and see no one, for years. Pride at the peak ends badly.

Reading it for a question
